(Howell, MI)-- The weather was picture perfect, as the Cleary Cougars sent off their three seniors, taking on the Madonna Crusaders at Lake Trust Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Madonna would strike early and often, scoring the game's first six goals in just five minutes. Cleary would get on the board shortly after, when Mike Smith slotted one home with an assist from Zach Eakes to cut the score to 6-1. Madonna would add another goal before Joe Heinzelman snipered one past the goalie with an assist from Danny Pudduck to cut the score to 7-2 with a minute left in the opening quarter. The second quarter was all Crusaders, as they held the Cougars scoreless and took a 27-2 hafltime lead.
Madonna would dominate most of the third quarter, but Cleary would score again when Danny Pudduck scored, with an assist from Hunter Bowerson to make the score 23-3. Madonna would add three more goals, but Cleary would score the game's final goal when Joey VanGoethem scored with just over a minute to go to make the score 26-4, which would hold with the final horn sounding.
The biggest story of the day would be Cougar goalkeeper, Adam Roper, who notched 22 saves on the day, and gave him 264 saves on the season. That gives Roper possession of the WHAC single season saves record, breaking the old record of 262 set by Lourdes' Conner Mishler in 2016 over 21 games.
Cleary finishes the season 0-14, 0-9 in WHAC play.
