(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar D1 hockey team continued their hot streak, as they won both games in their weekend series against the Eastern Michigan Eagles this weekend.
In Game 1 vs. EMU: The offense exploded scoring 9 goals over the first two periods to build an 9-3 lead going into the game's final 20 minutes. Zack Wiener scored the first goal, with assits from Brendyn Galloner and Zach Perry. Cam Thomas scored the second with an assist from Wes Smith. Levi Herauf scored with an assist from Zack Wiener, and Ben Gledhow scored the 1st period's final goal with, assists from Dalton Cummings and Zack Wiener. After EMU got on the board, Cleary scored five straight goals to take a 9-1 lead. Levi Herauf scored, with assists from Alessandro Nicastro and Devon Campbell. Ben Gledhow scored, with assists from Wes Smith and Jonny Gardiner. Aden Michael scored with an assist from Brendyn Galloner. Zach Perry scored, with assists from Aden Michael and Zack Wiener. The final goal of the period was scored by Aden Michael, with assists from Zach Perry and Brendyn Galloner. Brendyn Galloner would score the game's final goal in the 3rd period, with assists from Jonny Gardiner and Ben Gledhow.
Liam Kocur earned his first victory of the season, as he made 24 saves on 27 shots on goal.
In Game 2 vs. EMU: Cam Thomas got the Cougars on the board in the opening minutes, as he was freed open on a breakaway by Wes Smith to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. EMU would answer, scoring twice in the 1st period, and took that 2-1 lead into the first intermission. The Cougars responded in the 2nd period, scoring twice to take the lead. Dalton Cummings scored both goals in the 2nd period, with assists on the first goal from Zack Wiener and Ben Gledhow, and an assist on the second goal from Ben Gledhow. The Cougar offense would keep pressure on the Eagles as they looked for the game's dagger. Though they were unable to score an insurance goal, they prevented EMU from finding the equalizer and held on for the victory.
Liam Kocur once again earned the victory, as he made 16 saves on 18 shots faced, to go to 2-0 on the season.
Cleary has now won 5 straight games, setting a program record, and improves to 5-12 on the season. Pending a makeup date with Aquinas, the Cougars will next be in action in 2023, when they take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils on Friday, January 6 and January 7. The Cougars will host the Blue Devils on January 6 at 8:30 PM at 140 Ice Den.
