(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars hockey program earned two victories over the Easter Michigan University Eagles this weekend with solid defense and a much needed offensive explosion over two games.
In Game 1 at Eastern Michigan: After the Eagles got on the board in the first two minutes, Cleary's Ben Gledhow scored his first goal of the game (assisted by Wiener and Giuseppe Cracchiolo) to tie the game. Cleary would take more control of the game, and the work would pay off as Gledhow scored his second of the evening (assisted by Wes Smith and Zack Wiener) to take a 2-1 lead. EMU would equalize just before the end of the opening period, and the score would be 2-2 after 20 minutes. After the Eagles took the lead a minute into second period action, Cleary would rattle off three straight goals to take a commanding lead in the period and the game. Gledhow would score his 3rd goal, and netted his first career hat trick (assisted by Zach Eakes and Zack Wiener). Joe Heinzelman would get in on the action as he scored with 12 minutes left in the period (assisted by Julian Chau and Erik Wafer), and Zack Wiener scored (assisted by Alessandro Nicastro and Devon Campbell) to take a 5-3 going into the final period. Joe Heinzelman scored his second goal of the game (assisted by Justin Reddy and Wes Smith) with 13 minutes left, and Zack Wiener would score the final Cougar goal (assisted by Smith and Eakes) to take a 7-3 lead. A late Eagle goal narrowed the deficit, but it would not be enough as the Cougars won 7-4.
Koby Kebbe earned the victory in the net, stopping 21 of the 25 shots he faced.
In Game 2 at 140 Ice Den: Cleary's Luke Johnson got things going as he scored with just over 6 minutes left in the first period (assisted by Aden Michael) to take a 1-0 lead. That score would hold for the rest of the opening stanza. In the second period, while trying to kill a power play, Joe Heinzelman stole the puck and slotted it home for a shorthanded goal to take a 2-0 lead, and Jonny Gardiner would make it 3-0 on a power play with just 13 seconds left in the period (assisted by Wiener and Eakes). In the third period, Dalton Cummings would get on a breakaway to score (assisted by Wes Smith), and Ben Gledhow scored the team's final goal of the game (assisted by Riley Finlay and Zach Eakes) to make it 5-0. The Cougars would have to kill a 5 minute penalty to hold onto the shutout, but the defense prevailed, giving goalie Koby Kebbe his first career shutout, and the program's 2nd ever shutout, as Kebbe stopped all 31 shots he faced.
Cleary will be back in action next weekend with a home and home series against Michigan-Dearborn, with Friday's game at home with a start time of 6:30 PM, and Saturday's game will start at 7:00 PM.
