Baseball Ends Season With Make-Up Game Loss
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team knew they had to win in order to make the WHAC tournament, but couldn't take advantage of their opportunities, as the visiting Lawrence Tech Blue Devils won the game 11-6. The game was being made up from The original makeup date of April 3, and the Cougars came into today trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Prior to the game's suspension, Kristian Scalf scored on a Billy Flohr RBI groundout that advanced Ben Cerven to third base. Cerven would score on a wild pitch to tie the game. Three LTU runs in the top of the 2nd gave the Blue Devils a 5-2 lead when the game was suspended. After play resumed, LTU would score twice in the top of the 3rd to expand their lead to 7-2. Cleary would load the bases in the bottom of the 4th, and Caleb Buda singled right up the middle to score Zach Agemak and Jesnel Soto. The next batter, Ben Cerven, singled to right center, and scored Kristian Scalf to make the score 7-5. The Blue Devils bounced back, scoring a pair of runs in the 5th, and added two insurance runs over the 8th and 9th innings to expand their lead to 11-5. Cleary would get one run back in the bottom of the 9th. After Billy Flohr doubled to left center, Spencer Jamieson singled Flohr home, but the Cougars would not be able to rally for more runs.
Travis Klocek suffered the loss, throwing the game's first two innings, and allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits. Noah Bowles, Ryan Lieng, and Colin Brazil each allowed two runs apiece in relief. Cleary's offense was able to produce 11 hits, with Kristian Scalf, Ben Cerven, and Jesnel Soto each providing 2 hits for the Cougars.
Cleary finishes their season at 28-22, 17-15 in the WHAC. LTU clinched the 6-seed in this week's WHAC tournament on win percentage points with a 17-13 conference record.
