Women's Soccer Outscores Ohio Christian to End Non-Conference Play With a Victory
(Circleville, OH)-- The Cleary Cougars women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead, withstood a rally, and ultimately held on to win a high scoring affair as they defeated the Ohio Christian University Trailblazers 5-3 Saturday afternoon.
Cleary got things going right away to take an early lead. After getting the ball up the right hand side to Sophia Coelho, a pass was centered and found Felicia Moseley who slotted it into the net in the 4th minute of play to take an early 1-0 lead. Just one minute later, Coelho centered the ball again, this time finding senior captain Sydney Huston who made it 2-0 in favor of the Cougars. Ohio Christian would keep it interesting, as they scored one minute later to cut into the lead, and made the score 2-1. Things would settle some, but in the 20th minute, Felicia Moseley added her second goal of the game with an assist from Haley Finazzo to make the lead 3-1 in favor of Cleary. Four minutes after that, Moseley got her hat trick, and extended the lead to 4-1 Cleary. That score would hold for eight minutes, when the Trailblazers added their second goal of the game in the 32nd minute, and made the score 4-2. That score held until halftime.
A desparate Ohio Christian came out in the second half, and almost immediately cut into the two goal lead when the Trailblazers scored three minutes into the half, and made the score 4-3. Cleary would regain control of the game, but weren't able to break through again and ice the game until the 81st minute when Taylor Franco scored a goal, and make it 5-3 in favor of the Cougars. Cleary was able to hold on with no trouble, earning the victory, and ending non-conference play with a victory.
Tara McGrath earned the victory, her first of the season, and improves to 1-0-0, as she made 7 saves on 10 shots on goal. Felicia Moseley scored her first three goals as a Cougar on 4 shots on goal. Cleary outshot Ohio Christian 18-15, made 7 saves, and held the advantage on corner kicks at 4-1.
Cleary improves to 2-2 on the season, and will open up WHAC play on Saturday, September 24, when they host the Rochester Warriors at Lake Trust Stadium as part of a men's and women's soccer double-header. Kickoff in the women's game is set for 4:00 PM, and the men will follow at 7:00 pm.
