(Sylvania, OH)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team travelled south down US-23 to Sylvania, to take on the Lourdes Gray Wolves in a WHAC doubleheader.
In Game 1: Jessica Garmen led of the second inning with a solo home run, her sixth of the season, to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. After Lourdes tied it in the bottom half of the inning, Cleary would regain the lead, and take control of the game in the third. Maddie Bunkoske tripled to score Ashleigh Tatara and Jessica Garmen, giving Cleary a 3-1 lead. Bunkoske would score on the next at bat, when Grace MacCaughan singled, and MacCaughan would score when Mckenzie Latshaw singled to the shortstop, giving the Cougars a 6-1 advantage. Lourdes would score once in the bottom of the inning, but the Cougars answered again in the top of the fourth when Maddie Bunkoske singled to score Ashleigh Tatara, for a 7-2 lead. Cleary's final run came in the sixth when Sierra Diegel, who was pinch-running for Jenna Wagenschutz, scored on a suicide squeeze bunt single. Caitlynn Duffey would do her job against the Gray Wolves on the mound, and the Cougars went on to win 8-3.
Caitlynn Duffey earned her first victory of the season, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings pitched. Mckenzie Latshaw went 3/5 at the plate, while Jessica Garmen went 2/2 with 2 RBI and 2 runs, while Maddie Bunkoske went 2/4 with 3 RBI and 1 run scored.
In Game 2: Just like game one, Jessica Garmen led off the second inning with a solo home run, her seventh of the season, to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Lourdes would tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Cleary answered with another four runs in the top of the third. After Mckenzie Latshaw and Mia Rzepka both reached base, Kate Currie singled to score Latshaw. A Jenna Wagenschutz RBI fielder's choice would score Rzepka, and a double steal scored Currie, to make the score 4-1. Cleary would score the inning's fourth run on a Maddie Bunkoske RBI sacrifice fly, and led 5-1. Lourdes would score one more run in teh third, but the Cougars answered with another four run inning in the fifth. Jenna Wagenschutz would score on a Maddie Bunkoske sacrifice fly, followed by a Grace MacCaughan double that scored Ashleigh Tatara. Jessica Garmen would score on a Grace Pasterik sacrifice fly, and MacCaughan scored on a Mia Rzepka single to give the Cougars an 9-2 advantage. Lourdes scored one more run the rest of the way, and the Cougars went on to win by a final score of 9-3.
Halle Dargie earned her fifth win of the season, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits in 5.1 innings. Mia Rzepka went 3/4 with 1 RBI and 1 run, while Kate Currie went 2/4 with 1 RBI and 1 run.
Cleary is now 12-20, 7-9 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be at Lake Trust Stadium this Tuesday, April 16, when they take on the UNOH Racers in a makeup from earlier this season. It will be the final home series for the softball team this season. First pitch of game one is set for 3:00 PM.
