Cleary (MI)
(Melbourne, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team kicked off their spring break trip with a double-header against the Ft. Lauderdale Eagles Sunday evening at the Space Coast Games.
In Game 1: The Eagles would get on the board first after a fielding error in the top of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Ft. Lauderdale and Cougar pitcher Halle Dargie settled in, and the action would pick up in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Cleary still trailing 1-0. Mckenzie Latshaw would lead off the inning with an infield single, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Jessica Garmen would advance Latshaw to third on a single that wasn't quite deep enough to score the runner, and then a minor controversy would take place, as Allie Reynolds laid a bunt, that appeared to stay in the batter's box or foul territory. Latshaw was advancing on contact, and the Eagles' catcher picked up the ball and tagged her for the second out, and Cleary still without a run.
The Eagles would add a pair of runs to extend the lead to 3-0, and Cleary was held scoreless in the bottom of the seventh to drop game one.
Halle Dargie suffered the loss, allowing 3 unearned runs in 6.2 innings pitched. Cleary would get four hits, all in the sixth or seventh inning, and left 8 runners on base.
In Game 2: The Eagles and the Cougars saw each of the pitchers dual it out again, but the Eagles would come out on top for the second time in game two. Cleary would load the bases in the third inning, but were unable to take advantage. In the fourth, Grace Pasterik would single with two outs, and Mia Rzepka hit a double to left field, that got past the Eagle left fielder and ran past the left field fence, and was ruled a ground rule double, forcing Pasterik to return to third base. The Eagles made a pitching change, and Cleary was unable to advance the runners. In the sixth, Jenna Wagenschutz reached on an error with one out, and Madi Best singled, but that would be as far as the offense would get them, as Ft. Lauderdale made the plays to get out of the jam, and then held Cleary scoreless in the seventh to win the game.
Sonya Terleckyj threw a complete game, allowing 2 unearned runs on 3 hits in 6 innings. Cleary outhit Ft. Lauderdale 6-3 in game two, and Cleary left 9 runners on base.
Cleary falls to 1-5 on the season. The Cougars will be back in action on Monday, March 4, when they travel to Lake Wales, Florida to take on the Warner University Royals. First pitch of game one is set for 4:00 PM.
