(Brighton, MI)-- After almost a two year hiatus, the Cleary Cougar men's lacrosse team returned to action today, as they hosted the nationally ranked Statesmen of William Penn University at Legacy Center in Brighton.
The Statesmen jumped on the board early and often, as they were dominant on face-offs to gain possession, and then capitalized with goals, as they scored the first 11 goals of the game into the second quarter. The Cougars got on the board in the second quarter after a successful cleary got the ball into Danny Pudduck's crosse who found a cutting Joey VanGoethem in front of the net to score the first goal of his Cougar career. The Statesmen would tack on two more before VanGoethem struck from downtown to give the Cougars their second goal of the game, but the visitor's depth would prove to be too much as William Penn went on to win 23-2.
Joey VanGoethem had 2 goals, and Danny Pudduck added 1 assist for the Cougars. Adam Roper made 19 saves in goal in his collegiate debut. Cleary will next be in action a week from Monday, February 28, when they take on Midland University (NE) at the Grand Sports Complex in Westland, Indiana. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 PM
