(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar ACHA D1 hockey team played strong hockey in both games, but were unable to pick up their first victory of the season, as the UM-Dearborn Wolverines won both games in a home and home series this weekend.
In Game 1 vs. UM-Dearborn: The Cougars got on the scoreboard just 5 minutes into the game, as Chi Lok (Julian) Chau scored, with an assist from Nowell Snarey, to give Cleary the early 1-0 lead. Cleary held on for the rest of the period to take that lead into the first intermission. UM-Dearborn would score the only goal of the 2nd period, and the game would be tied going into the final 20 minutes of action. Neither team was able to find the winner in the third period, and overtime was needed. With 45 seconds left in OT, the Wolverines got their breakthough, as they scored past Tyler Krasofsky to take game 1 by a 2-1 score.
Krasofsky was under pressure all night, and allowed 2 goals while making 50 saves in the game. Julian Chau's goal was his 1st of the season.
In Game 2 at UM-Dearborn: Once again, Cleary was able to strike first, as Jonny Gardiner scored, with an assist from Zach Eakes, to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead late in the 1st period. The Wolverines would answer with a pair of goals in the 2nd period to take a 2-1 lead into the final intermission. After UM-Dearborn scored with 14 minutes left, Cleary would inch back after Brendyn Galloner scored, assisted by Wes Smith, to narrow the gap to 3-2. The Cougars were unable to find the late equalizer, as the Wolverines held on to win 3-2.
Tyler Krasofsky suffered the loss, allowing 3 goals while making 36 saves. Jonny Gardiner now has 6 goals to lead the Cougars, while Brendyn Galloner scored his 1st goal of the season.
Cleary drops to 0-12, 0-8 in the WHAC. The Cougars will have a weekend off before playing a home and home series against the Rochester Warriors. They will travel to the Fraser Hockeyland on Friday, November 11, and will host the Warriors at 140 Ice Den on Saturday, November 12. Puck drops on Saturday at 4:00 PM.
