Cougar Hockey Splits Opening Series vs. Calvin
(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars hockey team opened their 2021-22 season with a series vs. the Calvin University Knights, and split the 2-game series, with the visitors winning each game.
In game 1, Cleary jumped on the board early in the first on a power play goal, scored by Zack Wiener with the assist from Zack Eakes and Jonny Gardiner. The score would stay that way until midway through the 3rd period when Ben Gledhow scored with an assist from Joe Heinzelman to make it 2-0, a score that would hold for the remainder of the game. Tyler Krasofsky was stellar in goal, earning the first shutout victory in school history after stopping all 43 shot attempts Calvin put on net.
In game 2, Cleary once again jumped on the board early, this time with a goal by Cam Thomas in the first minute, which was assisted by Zack Wiener. Calvin would score the next 4 goals over the next 20 minutes of action, to take a 4-1 lead into the second period. Cleary would get one back on a power play goal by Colby Krupp, assisted by Devon Campbell. Calvin would answer a couple minutes later on a power play goal of their own, to secure the 5-2 lead, and with no goals scored in the final stanza, the lead would hold for the Knights.
Kobe Kebbe faced 40 shots, making 35 saves in the game, and took the loss.
Cleary will open up WHAC-tion next weekend with a two game series against Indiana Tech. They will play in Ft. Wayne on Friday at 8:30, and on Saturday at the 140 Ice Den at 1:00 pm.
