Cougars Swept on Homecoming Weekend by Nationally Ranked Warriors
(Howell, MI)-- The visiting and nationally ranked Indiana Tech Warriors hockey team came to town, and spoiled the Homecoming weekend festivities with a pair of victories over the Cougars in a weekend series.
In Game 1 in Ft. Wayne, the Warriors jumped on the scoreboard first, and then scored 3 more before Wes Smith got the Cougars in on the action late in the first period. Justin Reddy scored a goal early in the second the inch closer to the Warriors lead, but two power play goals for the Warriors reclaimed the lead for the home team. Wes Smith scored his second goal of the game late in the period with an assist from Jonny Gardiner to make it 6-3 after two periods. Cleary was only able to score once more in the game, when Colby Krupp scored with assists from Cam Thomas and Giuseppe Cracchiolo, but Indiana Tech would add 5 in the final stanza to secure an 11-4 victory.
Liam Kocur took the loss in goal, making 29 saves on 40 shots. Wes Smith had 2 goals to lead the Cougars.
In Game 2 in Howell, Indiana Tech got on the board in the first minute of the game, but Cleary would answer just a couple minutes later on a Ben Gledhow equalizer, with assists from Cam Thomas and Zach Perry. That score would hold for the rest of the period. Indiana Tech came out on fire in the second period, scoring all four goals scored to take a commanding 5-1 lead. The third period was wide open, and after Indiana Tech scored once more, Cleary would score two straight, thanks to Jonny Gardiner (assisted by Wes Smith) and a power play goal by Cam Thomas (assisted by Wes Smith). Unfortunately, that would be as close as Cleary could get, as the Warriors would add 3 insurance goals late to secure the victory.
Tyler Krasofsky made 29 saves on 38 shots, and Wes Smith added 2 assists. Cam Thomas had a goal and an assist.
Cleary will be in action next weekend when they play a home and home series against the Aquinas Saints. Cleary will host on Friday, October 15, at 8:00 pm at 140 Ice Den, and play at Aquinas on Saturday, October 16, at 8:00 pm.
