(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar ACHA hockey team started slow, but ended up scoring nine goals en route to a WHAC victory over the rival Rochester Warriors Friday evening at 140 Ice Den.
Rochester would score two first period goals, but woke up the Cougar offense, as Jonny Gardiner scored a power play goal, with an assist from Bennett Sheppard to cut into the deficit. Just two minutes later, Levi Herauf tied the game, with assists from Zack Wiener and Brendyn Galloner. That score would hold through the rest of the period.
In the second period, the two teams traded goals, with Cleary scoring three times, and the Warriors scoring twice. Cleary scored a power play goal from Zack Wiener, with an assist from Ben Gledhow, followed by a Cam Thomas goal, with assists from Wes Smith and Zack Wiener, and another Zack Wiener power play goal, with assists from Jonny Gardiner and Wes Smith, gave the hosts a 5-4 lead going into the final period of play. Rochester would tie the game just three minutes into the third period, but Jonny Gardiner scored, with assists from Ben Gledhow and Bennett Sheppard to give the Cougars the lead for good. Ben Gledhow would add another power play goal, with assists from Zack Wiener and Bennett Sheppard. Cam Thomas scored his second of the game with the Warrior goalie pulled, and Bennett Sheppard scored the game's final goal to leave no doubt, with an assist from Wes Smith, to make the score 9-5 in favor of the Cougars.
Liam Kocur picked up his fifth win on the season, making 25 saves on 30 shots on goal. Zack Wiener scored two goals and added 3 assists to lead the offense, while Bennett Sheppard had a goal and 3 assists. Jonny Gardiner and Cam Thomas each posted 2 goals in the game.
Cleary is now 5-10 on the season, 3-6 in the WHAC. The two teams will play game two of the series on Saturday, November 11, when Rochester hosts Cleary at Big Boy Arena in Fraser. The puck is set to drop at 7:15 PM.
