(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team needed to win at home to earn a spot in the WHAC tournament, but the Aquinas College Saints were too much to overcome, as the Cougars season came to an end after falling 6-0 at Lake Trust Stadium Saturday evening.
The Saints came out on fire, as they would score three goals in the first five minutes of play to take a 3-0 lead. Aquinas would add a fourth goal just past the ten minute mark of the half, building a 4-0 lead. Cleary's defense would settle into the game, and though they conceded shots, they did not concede for the remainder of the half, and the two teams went into the break with the same 4-0 score.
Cleary's best chances to get back into the game came after the restart. Ashley Stover would force a save out of the Saints' goalkeeper in the 49th minute. In the 65th minute, Cleary drew a foul in a dangerous area just outside the box. Emily Bourn would use her left foot to curl the ball towards the back post, forcing another save from the Saints, but the Cougars were unable to pounce. Aquinas would reestablish themselves down the stretch, adding a pair of goals late to take the game 6-0.
Sara Mecomber made 8 saves in the game while suffering the loss in goal.
Cleary's season comes to an end with a 6-8-4 record overall, 2-5-4 in the WHAC.
