(Grand Rapids, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team was in Grand Rapids Saturday afternoon to open their WHAC season against the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles would get on the scoreboard late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead into the break. A long ball down the right hand side allowed the Cornerstone player to get behind the defense, where she fired a cross into the box, and found a runner at the near post who was able to redirect the ball into the net to put the Cougars in the hole.
Cleary would try to get back into the game in the second half, but a red card shown to a Cougar in the 71st minute would force Cleary to play the remainder of the game down a player. Cleary would not generate the chances down the stretch to equalize, and the Cougars would fall by a 1-0 score.
Cornerstone would hold the advantage over the Cougars in shots, shots on goal, corner kicks, and fouls in the game. Bella Marsh made 7 saves on 8 shots faced in goal, and now holds a 4-3 record on the season.
Cleary drops to 4-4 overall, 0-1 in the WHAC. The Cougars will look to bounce back on Wednesday, September 24, when they host the UNOH Racers at Lake Trust Stadium in a WHAC contest. The game is set to begin at 6:00 PM.
