(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's soccer team made their Lake Trust Stadium debut Wednesday evening, but fell to the visiting Mount Vernon Nazarene (MVNU) Cougars by a 2-0 score.
The first half was a very sluggish game, as both teams unable to connect their passes, and a total of twelve fouls were called in the first 45 minutes to muddy up the game. The two teams would go into the half tied 0-0.
In the second half, MVNU came out on the front foot, and scored the game's opening goal on a shot into the upper right corner of the net, just getting past goalkeeper Bella Marsh. Marsh would be called upon in the 71st minute, as she made a kick save on a MVNU breakaway that kept Cleary within striking distance for the moment. However, on the resulting corner kick, MVNU was left unmarked at the top of the penalty area, and the shot took a deflection and was able to get passed Marsh to extend the visitor's lead. Cleary would push forward in the final 15 minutes, and had a couple of dangerous looks on goal. Taylor Franco was sent up the left hand side by a perfectly weighted pass by Evalyn Cole, but Franco's shot was right at the MVNU goalkeeper. In the final minute, Cleary sent goalkeeper Bella Marsh into the attack for a free kick, where the pass found her head, but the shot was also right at the keeper, as MVNU would then go on to see out the game.
Bella Marsh made 8 saves on 10 shots faced in her first start of the season. Cleary was outshot 17-6, with a 10-3 advantage of shots on goal favoring MVNU. Cleary committed 15 fouls to MVNU's 8 in the game.
The loss drops CU to 0-2 on the season, but the Cougars will look to bounce back on Friday, August 29, when they host the Cincinnati-Clermont Cougars at Lake Trust Stadium. Kick-off is set for 6:00 PM.
