Cougars Earn First Conference Win at Rochester
(Pontiac, MI)-- After coming into the game winless in their previous five games, the Cleary Cougars women's lacrosse team dominated the host Rochester Warriors on route to a 19-2 victory to pick up their first conference victory of the season.
The Cougars started off hot, using their defense to ignite the offense, as they shut out the Warriors in the first quarter. Georgia Price would score the game's first goal, assisted by Mallory Tognetti in the first minute. Natalie Busen would score the next two goals, and Mallory Tognetti would score the next two goals after that, to give the Cougars an early 5-0 lead. Alana Harrison scored her first goal of the game with just over six minutes remaining in the quarter. After a couple minutes of scoreless action, Mallory Tognetti scored her third goal of the game, assisted by Kendal David, and right before the quarter ended, Alana Harrison scored her second goal, assisted by Tognetti, to give the Cougars an 8-0 lead through fifteen minutes.
Rochester would score their first goal to open up the second quarter, but Cleary would add six more before halftime to take a 14-1 lead into the break. Georgia Price would score three goals, all unassisted, while Mallory Tognetti, Alana Harrison, and Natalie Busen each added one for the Cougars in the period.
The third and fourth quarters were much lower scoring, but there were some major accomplishments for Cleary in those thirty minutes. Cleary's first goal of the third quarter was scored by Madison Crumback. That goal was her first career goal as a Cougar. After a Rochester goal, Ashlie Wood scored to end the third period and make the score 16-2. In the fourth quarter, Macie Magda got in on the action to score Cleary's 17th goal, and Anna Clark scored her first career goal to make the score 18-2. The game's final goal was scored with just over a minute to play by Alexandria Zimmerman, who scored her first career goal, and made the score 19-2.
Kennedy Stilson earned her second victory in goal, but didn't have to do much, as the defense in front of her limited shot attempts all night. Mallory Tognetti led the offense with 4 goals and 2 assists, while Georgia Price also had 4 goals for the Cougars. Natalie Busen and Alana Harrison each added a hat-trick for Cleary, who is now 2-7, 1-5 in WHAC play. Cleary will be back in action this Saturday, April 9, when they travel to Ann Arbor to take on the Concordia Cardinals. The game is scheduled to start at 11:00 AM.
