Women's Lacrosse Gets Stung by Hornets
(Brighton, MI)-- The Cleary Cougars women's lacrosse team dug themselves into a deficit, but couldn't mount a comeback, as the visiting Kalamazoo College Hornets defeated Cleary 19-8 at Legacy Center in Brighton.
Kalamazoo scored the first 7 goals of the game to take an early lead in the 1st quarter. Cleary seemed to wake up right before the quarter ended, when after a fould was called against Kalamazoo, Emily Santana took the ball from half field and attacked from just outside the crease to beat the clock to get the Cougars on the board, albeit trailing 7-1 after 15 minutes of action. Natalie Busen took the opening draw control to start the second quarter all the way to the house, slotting the ball past the goalie to cut into the Hornets' lead at 7-2. 40 seconds later, Emily Santana scored her second goal of the game to make it 7-3, but that would be the last goal of the half for Cleary, as the Hornets scored 5 more goals to finish out the quarter and take a 13-3 lead into the half.
The two teams traded goals over the course of the third quarter, with Cleary's Natalie Busen and Georgia Price scoring for the Cougars, but Cleary would still trail 16-5 with only 15 minutes still to play. Emily Santana would score twice, and Natalie Busen once to open the fourth quarter, cutting into the Hornets' lead at 16-8, but the visitors would score three times to finish the game to take a 19-8 victory.
Kennedy Stilson made 7 saves on 26 shots faced in goal for Cleary. Emily Santana led the Cougars with 4 goals, while Natalie Busen added 3 goals and an assist.
Cleary will have a couple of weeks off before they next play, as they host the Adrian College Bulldogs on Monday, March 14, at Lake Trust Stadium. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 PM.
