Women's Basketball Drops WHAC Matchup to Cornerstone
(Grand Rapids, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar women's basketball team played their second game of the week in West Michigan, and suffered their second WHAC defeat of the week, as they fell to the Cornerstone Golden Eagles 77-50 Saturday evening.
The Golden Eagles would score the game's first four points, before Samantha Hoelscher score Cleary's first points on a layup. Cornerstone would then go on another run, building a 14-2 lead. Jess Andrew then scored five straight points for the Cougars, getting the Cougars back into the game. The Golden Eagles would finish the quarter strong, and Cleary trailed 18-7 after the first quarter.
Cleary would hit back to back three pointers from Makenna Jarratt and Melanin Holman, getting the score to 18-13 to open the second quarter. Cornerstone would answer, and built a double-digit lead by the midway point of the quarter. The deficit would grow to as many as nineteen points in the first half, but the Cougars would get that deficit to 38-22 by the halftime break.
Unfortunately for the Cougars, a comeback would not happen, as Cornerstone was able to extend their lead to twenty points by the 5:00 minute mark of the third quarter, and it would grow to thirty points in the fourth quarter, a deficit too large to overcome.
Melanin Holman led the Cougars with 15 points and 8 rebounds, while Jess Andrew added 14 points and 3 rebounds.
The loss drops Cleary's record to 10-10 overall, 8-6 in the WHAC. The Cougars will look to rebound on Tuesday, January 27, when they host the UM-Dearborn Wolverines at Gannon Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM.
