(Viera, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team returned to action after a day off in the Sunshine State, as they took on the Carolina Bruins and the Saint Francis Cougars in a doubleheader at the Space Coast Games in Viera, Florida.
In Game 1 vs. Carolina: The Bruins would strike first in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Cleary would answer in the bottom of the third when Olivia DeJohn singled up the middle to score Grace Polega. The rally continued two batters later as Leah Schumann singled through the right side, scoring Allie Hawkins and Olivia DeJohn, making the score 3-1. After Carolina scored in the top of the fifth to narrow the Cougar lead, Cleary would put five runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning, with RBI hits from Sierra Diegel, and Grace Polega. Allie Hawkins hit a sacrifice bunt for the seventh run, and Leah Schumann brought home a run after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
That would be all Haley Ludwig needed, as she threw a complete game, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, with 5 strikeouts.
Grace Polega would have two hits, and Olivia DeJohn, Leah Schumann, and Sierra Diegel added the other three hits.
In Game 2 vs. Saint Francis: Saint Francis would put a run on the board in the fourth, and took advantage of some Cougar fielding miscues in the sixth, scoring four more runs to open up a 5-0 lead. They would add a sixth and final insurance run in the top of the seventh to build a 6-0 lead. Cleary's offense would be held in check, only piecing four hits together, but not in succession, as USF would go on to win 6-0.
Kami Linton would suffer the loss for Cleary, allowing 6 runs (1 earned) on 6 hits, with 3 strikeouts.
Brooke Williams would go 2/3 at the plate, while Olivia DeJohn and Summer Smith had 1 hit apiece.
The Cougars are now 2-7, and will return to action tomorrow morning when they play two more games. Cleary will take on the Ave Maria Gyrenes at 10:00 AM, and the Bethel Pilots at 12:15 PM.
