(Sarasota, FL)-- The Cleary Cougar softball team returned to the diamond for another doubleheader in the Sunshine State Monday, as they took on the New College of Florida Mighty Banyans in Sarasota.
In Game 1: NCF jumped on the Cougars early, scoring five runs in the first inning, and four more in the second inning to take a 9-0 lead. Cleary would load the bases in the top of the fourth after singles from Grace Polega, Mckenzie Latshaw, and Olivia DeJohn. Summer Smith would single to score Polega, but that would be the end of the rally, and the only Cougar run in the game, as Cleary fell 9-1.
Kami Linton suffered the loss for the Cougars, allowing 8 runs on 7 hits. Jade Kupsky was solid in relief allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 3 innings of work. Grace Polega continued to swing a hot bat, as she went 2/3 at the plate, while Mckenzie Latshaw, Olivia DeJohn, Summer Smith, and Paulina O'Donohue each added one hit.
In Game 2: Like game one, the Mighty Banyans struck early, scoring seven runs in the first, once in the second, and four times in the third to open a 12-0 lead. Cleary would get a runner in scoring position in the fourth inning when Courtney Witten and Ashleigh Tatara each singled, and then advanced on a fielder's choice, but they would be unable to bring the runner home.
Haley Ludwig would suffer the loss for the Cougars, allowing 7 runs on 8 hits in the game. Grace Polega went 2/3 in the game, while Allie Hawkins, Courtney Witten, and Ashleigh Tatara each added a hit for the Cougars.
Cleary falls ot 1-6 overall, and will have a day off before returning to action on Wednesday, March 4, with a pair of games on Florida's Space Coast. They'll take on the Bruins of Carolina University and the Cougars of Saint Francis at 12:15 PM and 2:30 PM respectively.
