Wrestling Earns 6th Place at WHAC Championships Highlighted by Spiess' 3rd Place Finish
(Fort Wayne, IN): The Cleary wrestling team have plenty to be excited about, as the team saw three Cougars earn top-6 finishes on route to a 6th place team finish at the WHAC Championships, hosted by Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
In the 125 lb. Division, Jordan Piercy dropped his first match 2-0, and was defeated 9-1 in the consolation bracket to go 0-2 on the day.
In the 141 lb. Division, Ryan Weaver advanced to round 2 with a bye, and was defeated by decision 8-2 to drop to the consolation bracket. In his first consolation matchup, he won via decision 11-5, but was pinned in the consolation semifinals.
Jace Ellis also earned a bye in his first round, and was then defeated by a technical fall to move him to the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, Ellis won via decision 7-6 to give him the opportunity to face teammate Ryan Weaver in the 5th place bout. Both took a forfeit, so both were able to claim 6th place for the Cougars.
In the 197 lb. Division, Ethan Green lost hist first match via decision 2-0, and was defeated in the consolation bracket my medical forteit. Jacob Spiess earned a pin over the his first opponent after only 2:40, then defeated #18 nationally ranked wrestler in this weight class from Indiana Tech 5-3 to advance to the Championship match. In the Finals, Spiess was pinned after 1:27 to drop him to the 2nd place match, where he was pinned after 0:29 seconds, giving Spiess a 3rd place finish in WHAC Conference play.
