Spiess Sets School Record at Spartan Mat Classic
(North Manchester, IN)-- Jacob Spiess was beaten in the consolation bracket semifinals, but was still able to make history, as he set a new single season record for wins in a season with 19 as the team competed at the Manchester University Spartan Mat Classic on Saturday.
In the 133 lb. division, Logan Ladach was pinned in his opening round match after 3:50, and then was pinned in his consolation bracket match after 2:10 to go 0-2 on the day.
In the 149 lb. division, Ryan Weaver advanced to round 2 on a bye, but was pinned after 2:16 in his second round matchup. In his consolation bracket matchup, Weaver was defeated, but this time on a 6-0 decision. Weaver went 0-2 on the day.
In the 197 lb. division, Jacob Spiess advanced out of the first round with a 9-1 major decision. He'd earn another major decision in his second round, this time winning 8-0. In the semifinals, Spiess was pinned after 3:55 of action. In the consolation bracket, Spiess would win a 5-3 decision to advance to the bracket semis once again, but was pinned in 3:55 to drop into the 7th place match. In that match, Spiess would win on a medical forfeith to finish the day with his 19th victory on the season, going 4-2 on the day.
As a team, the Cougars would earn 13 points to finish in 16th place out of 19 teams. Cleary will be back in action on Tuesday, January 18, when they head to Adrian to take on Siena Heights, with the first match starting at 7:00 PM.
