Men's Soccer Earns Win at Cornerstone to Open WHAC Play

(Grand Rapids, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar men's soccer team began their Wolverine-Hoosier campaign with a road game against the Cornerstone Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon in Grand Rapids, and a pair of first half goals would prove to be the difference.
A relatively uneventful start to the game would turn in Cleary's favor in the 12th minute, when Adam Baldwin scored in his second straight game to put the Cougars on top. Miguel Andriano Castillo would provide the assist to Baldwin. Late in the first half, Luca Taylor would fire a shot into the net from the right side after receiving a pass from Atario Brown to double Cleary's lead heading into the half.
Cleary would control most of the play in the second half, and with Cornerstone pushing to try and get back into the game, Austin Freemire and the Cougar defense would be called upon to keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard. Freemire would make six second half saves to earn a shutout, and helped the Cougars earn a 2-0 victory in the process.
Cornerstone outshot the Cougars 15-12 in the game, and also held a 9-6 advantage on shots on target. The two teams had 5 corner kicks apiece, while the Golden Eagles committed 9 fouls to Cleary's 3 in the game.
Austin Freemire would earn his fourth win on the season to improve to 4-1. Both Adam Baldwin and Luca Taylor scored their second goals of the season in the game.
It was only the second win all-time against Cornerstone, and was the 1st win in team history on the road at Cornerstone.
The win improves Cleary's record to 7-1 overall, 1-0 in the WHAC. The Cougars will next be in action on Wednesday, September 24, when they travel to Lima, Ohio to take on the 'receiving votes' UNOH Racers. The game is set to begin at 4:00 PM.
