Cleary Men's Lacrosse to Host LEAD Initiative Game
(Howell, MI)-- This Friday’s WHAC men’s lacrosse game between the Siena Heights Saints and the Cleary Cougars at Lake Trust Stadium will also be the L.E.A.D. initiative game for the Cougars. Cleary’s players will be wearing L.E.A.D. stickers on their helmets beginning with this game, and throughout the remainder of the 2022 season.
The week of March 21-27, 2022, is LEAD Week for the IMLCA (Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches Association).
LEAD’s missions statement is to:
Create an equitable and sustainable community within the sport of lacrosse where minorities will unequivocally have the chance to engage and excel in a safe and supported environment.
Cougar men’s lacrosse head coach Craig Lowery says this an extremely important week across the sport.
“It’s important for the growth and the future of the game. We are trying to continue the progress that has already been made. Most importantly, this week honors the legacy of Jim Brown, who is the highest profile African American player that lacrosse has had. It is important for ALL student-athletes to be given the opportunity to excel in the classroom, and on the field.”
Jim Brown is arguably the biggest name to have ever played lacrosse, and was a 2x All-American at Syracuse where he scored 77 goals in just two seasons (1956-57).
Coach Lowery continued, “Incorporating more minority and underrepresented student-athletes allows the sport to truly grow. It gives individuals from all backgrounds a voice to be heard, a chance to be seen, and to play the sport they love.
Native Americans called lacrosse the Medicine Game, because it allowed the participating players to have the opportunity to heal their differences, and that transcends all races, religions, creeds, and backgrounds.”
