(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team returned to the Lake Thursday afternoon for a WHAC doubleheader against the Aquinas College Saints with WHAC Tournament seeding implications.
In Game 1: After giving up a home run in the top of the first inning, Celary would respond in the bottom half of the inning when Ryan Rose doubled to score Landon Kempainen, tying the game at one a piece. Cleary would later take the lead in the third inning on a Ryan Rose triple that scored Brodie Mackay. Rose would later score in the inning to make it three to one in favor of the Cougars. A Brice Wesley single with the bases loaded would score Austin Vincent and Joseph Miller, giving Cleary a 5-1 advantage at the end of the third inning. In the fifth inning, Austin Vincent would double, scoring Braylon Hughes to make it 6-1. A Landon Kempainen sacrifice fly would score Austin Vincent for the Cougars' 7th run of the game. That was all Brendan Seman needed, as he picked up his seventh win of the season. He allowed 1 run with 5 strikeouts on 3 hits in 5 innings of work. Darion Amico threw two innings of perfect baseball in relief to complete the game.
Brice Wesley went 3/4 with 2 RBI in the game, while Brendan Seman, Ryan Rose, Jake VanderHaar, and Braylon Hughes each added 2 hits in the game.
In Game 2: Game two started off well for the Cougars, with back-to-back hits from Brice Wesley and Brodie Mackay to score Brendan Seman and Wesley, to make the score 2-0 in the first inning. Cleary would tack on five more runs in the second inning, taking a 7-0 lead over the Saints. Aquinas would get on the board in the top of the third with two runs off of a double, but a Brendan Seman sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the inning would give Cleary a six-run lead. Aquinas would storm back to get within two runs in the 5th inning as Cleary's lead shrunk to 8-6. Brice Wesley would give the Cougars some cushion with a two-run RBI single that scored Austin Vincent and Braylon Hughes, but the rest of the game would favor the Saints, as they would score seven unanswered runs to take the game 13-10.
Brice Wesley would go 3/4 at the plate with 5 RBI in the game, while Braylon Hughes went 3/5 at the plate with 2 runs scored.
Brendan Seman would make history on the day, with his game one victory on the mound he set a new single season record in the NAIA-era with 7 wins, and with his second hit of the game in game 2, he became the first Cleary Cougar to achieve 70 hits in a in a single season.
Cleary is now 27-19 overall, and are 16-10 in the WHAC. The Cougars will finish the regular season at home with a doubleheader against the Aquinas Saints on Saturday, April 25. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM
