(Howell, MI) -- The Cleary Cougar baseball team honored and recognized this year's seniors prior to first pitch, as they played two games against the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn Sunday afternoon at Lake Trust Stadium.
In Game 1: The two teams would trade runs in the first two innings, and then the Wolverines would take a three to one lead in the third after a two-run home run. Cleary would respond in the bottom of the inning, as Landon Kempainen singled to score Brendan Seman, followed by a Ryan Rose double. Rose would later score to give Cleary the lead on an error. Michigan-Dearborn would retake the lead in the top of the 4th, scoring three more runs. In the bottom half of the inning, Brice Wesley hit a bases clearing double to give Cleary back the lead with the score 7-6. The Wolverines would respond once again, scoring three more runs in the fifth and adding a tenth run in the sixth to build a two-run advantage. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brodie Mackay doubled to score Landon Kempainen, getting Cleary within one run with no outs, but the runner would be left stranded and the game would end favoring the Wolverines.
Brendan Seman went 2/3 with two runs scored in the game, while Brice Wesley added one hit and three RBI. Bryson Roberts would suffer the loss on the mound in game one.
In Game 2: Landon Kempainen would start things off in the bottom of the first with an RBI single to score Brendan Seman giving Cleary the lead. Later in the inning, Brice Wesley would score on a fielder's choice to give Cleary a two-run lead. After a scoreless second inning, Cleary's bats came alive in the bottom of the third, as they scored eight runs to take control of the game. Braylon Hughes, Austin Vincent, Landon Kempainen, and Brodie Mackay all had hits that scored runs, including a home run from Mackay, while a Brice Wesley bases loaded walk would score the other run in the inning. Cleary would add their final run of the game and the bottom of the sixth, when Luciano Bollini scored on a wild pitch.
Ryan Lieng would pick up the win for the Cougars, throwing five innings of one hit baseball with five strikeouts. Parker Davis and Brody Fay would combine for two innings of shutout baseball to finish the game. Brendan Seman, Landon Kempainen, and Brodie Mackay each had multi-hit games for the Cougars.
Cleary is now 25-17 overall, and are 15-9 in the WHAC. The Cougars will be on the road for a non-conference doubleheader with the Grace Christian Tigers on Wednesday, April 22. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM
