(Fort Wayne, IN)-- The Cleary Cougar baseball team was in action Saturday, playing a conference doubleheader against the Indiana Tech Warriors.
In Game 1: Indiana Tech would score four runs in the first two innings, taking a 4-0 lead. In the fifth inning, Braylon Hughes would draw a leadoff walk to rach base, and later scored after the Warriors committed an error, making the score 4-1. Indiana Tech would answer in the bottom half of the inning with a home run, regaining their four run advantage. in the top of the seventh, Cleary would put the go-ahead run at the plate, as the Cougars would load the bases with one out. Landon Kempainen drew a walk to get one run home, and making the score 5-2. The next batter, Brodie Mackay would hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Brendan Seman, and making the score 5-3. Down to their final out, the rally would end on a line out to first base.
Brett Parris suffered his first loss of the season, allowing 5 runs (4 earned) on 5 hits in 5 innings of work. Brody Fay threw 1 inning of shutout baseball in relief. Landon Kempainen would have the Cougars' lone hit in the game, going 1/2 at the plate with 2 walks.
In Game 2: After Brendan Seman reached on a fielding error, Brice Wesley made the Warriors pay with an absolute bomb of a home run, clearing the left field netting, and hitting the dorms beyond the netting on the fly, giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead. In the third inning, Landon Kempainen drew a walk, stole second base, and scored on a Jake VanDerHaar single to right field, giving Cleary a 3-0 lead. Indiana Tech would score twice in the bottom half of the inning, making it 3-2, but Brice Wesley singled to score Austin Vincent, giving Cleary a 4-2 lead. The rest of the game would be all Warriors, as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Cleary's final run came in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout that scored Conner Boone. Indiana Tech would tack on five more runs to finish the game, going on to win by a 14-5 score.
Jacob Noseworthy made the start, and earned a no-decision in the game. Bryson Roberts would suffer the loss on the mound for the Cougars. Brice Wesley went 2/4 with 3 RBI and 1 R in the game.
Cleary drops to 11-9 ovearll, 2-4 in the WHAC. The Cougars will return to action on Sunday at Lake Trust Stadium, with a doubleheader against the Rochester Christian Warriors. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00 PM.
