(Howell, MI) -- The Cleary Cougars baseball team played their first night games of the season as they took on the Grace Christian Tigers this evening. Both offenses would explode for a combined 35 runs in the two 7-inning games.
In Game 1: The Cougars would get things going in 2nd inning taking a 2-0 lead on a groundout that scored Ryan Davis and a wild pitch that scored Austin Santure. The Tigers would gain a run back in the top of the 3rd inning but the Cougars would score a run as well to keep the lead at 3-1. After scoring 2 runs on 2 hits in the top of the 4th inning making it a tied ballgame, Ethan Barclay would rope a triple to right center field for 2 RBI's. Zach Agemak would then follow it up with a single giving the Cougars a 6-3 lead. Grace Christian would not back off as they would score 5 more runs in the top of the 5th inning. In the bottom half of the inning, the Cougars would respond with 4 more runs. Ethan Barclay would get the scoring started with his second triple of the game scoring Austin Santure and Spencer Jamieson. Zach Agemak would follow it up once again with another single to center field. He would then reach 3rd on a single by Gavin Kempainen. Zach Agemak would steal home for the final run of the inning on a pickoff attempt. With the Cougars leading 10-8, the Tigers would fight on and come back in the 6th inning scoring 4 runs in the inning which included 2 solo home runs. In the 7th inning, the Cougars would go down in order handing them the 12-10 loss.
Brody Fay made his first start on the mound this season going 3.1 innings while allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Kristian Scalf (0-1) ultimately suffered the loss after allowing 4 runs in 0.2 innings pitched. Ethan Barclay would pick up 5 RBIs in this game after going 2-4 at the plate with 2 triples.
In Game 2: Grace Christian would kick things off early with a 3-run home run in the top of the 2nd inning. The Cougars would get a run back in the 3rd inning when Zach Agemak grounded out to the shortstop which allowed Ben Cerven to score from 3rd base. In the 4th, the Tigers would add another run to the score making it a 4-1 game. Ethan Barclay would kick off a 5-run comeback in the bottom half of the inning with a single to score Spencer Jamieson. Caleb Buda would then hit an infield single that scored Albert Gonzalez. Zach Agemak would then hit a ball to the right-center field gap that would roll to the fence allowing him to go all the way around the bases for a 3 run inside the park home run and give the Cougars a 6-4 lead. Ethan Barclay would pick up another hit and 2 more RBIs in the 5th inning increasing the lead to 8-4. The Cougars would then seal the 9-4 victory on a game-ending double play allowing them to pick up their 9th win on the season.
Noah Bowles (1-0) would get his first start and win on the mound this season after going 4.0 innings and allowing 4 runs. Frank Turley and Austin Santure would get their first chances on the mound this year combining for 2.1 innings pitched. Zach Agemak would pick up his first career home run along with 4 RBIs.
The Cougars are now 9-20 overall on the season. They look to pick conference play back up tomorrow as they take on the Siena Heights Saints in a WHAC conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
