Milligan
(Kingsport, TN)-- The Cleary Cougars baseball team celebrated their opening day with a double-header in Kingsport, TN against the Milligan Buffaloes this afternoon, and both teams would each take a game in the series.
In Game 1: Milligan would get a run off Garrett Larner in the bottom of the 1st to take an early 1-0 lead. Derek Zavala made his Cougar debut, and brought home Zach Hargis on a sacrifice fly in the top of the 2nd to tie things up, but the host Buffaloes would add 3 total runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings to take a 4-1 lead. Cleary got one back in the top of the 4th, when Zavala stole second, which allowed Kyle Miazgowicz to steal home, making it 4-2. Milligan added one more in the bottom of the 4th, and would hold that 5-2 lead until Spencer Jamieson singled home Zavala to make it 5-3, but the Cougars could not rally for the victory and Milligan held on to win 5-3.
Garrett Larner took the loss while going 4 innings, striking out 5 and allowing 5 runs.
In Game 2: It was a offensive struggle as both teams could not string together hits, and it would be scoreless until the top of the 5th when Aaron Dyke scored on a wild pitch to give Cleary a 1-0 lead. After a home run in the bottom of the 5th to tie the game, it would remain scoreless through the 7 inning regulation, and more, as the Cougars would get a go-ahead home run by Derek Zavala in the top of the 9th to take a 2-1 lead, which Cleary held on to for the victory.
Travis Klocek went 5 innings, striking out 4, and allowing 1 run, while Anthony Lacle earned the victory on the mound, going 4 innings, striking out 4, and allowing 0 runs. Klocek and Lacle would combine for a 1 run, 7 hit performance in the win.
Cleary is back in action on Sunday, February 6, when they take on Rio Grande in a double-header. First pitch is at 10:00 AM.
Notes:
- Cleary won game 2 by a score of 2-1 while only managing 2 total hits.
- Derek Zavala made his Cleary debut today, and hit his 1st home run as a Cougar
- Anthony Lacle has now played 3 seasons for Cleary, but made his pitching debut in today's second game. He earned the win while pitching 4 scoreless innings
