(Howell, MI)-- The Cleary Cougar ACHA Hockey team returned to the ice this weekend for a home-and-home series with the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines, and each team earned a win on home ice.
In Game 1 at UM-Dearborn: The Wolverines scored the game's first four goal into the second period before the Cougars would be able to stop the run. Landen Engles scored for the Cougars, with an assist by Blair Krawchyk, to make the score 4-1. Minutes later, Mason Blow scored, with assists from Blair Krawchyk and Braeden Bzovey, to cut the Wolverine lead to 4-2, a score that would hold for the remainder of the second period. In the third period, the Wolverines scored on a power play to regain the three-goal advantage. Cleary answered within a minute, as Bennett Sheppard scored, with assists from Dylan Tammadge and JC Garbacik, making the score 5-3. UM-Dearborn would get the insurance goal short-handed, and kept the Cougars out of the back of the net, handing Cleary a 6-3 loss.
Vincent Parent would take the loss in goal, making 18 saves on 22 shots faced.
In Game 2 vs. UM-Dearborn: JC Garbacik scored just four and a half minutes into the game, with assists from Steven Miller and Collin Kerchoff, giving the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. Blair Krawchyk scored the team's second goal just two minutes later, with assists from Landen Engles and Dylan Tammadge, to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. After a barrage of shots by the Wolverines to start the second period, Cleary's defense would stand tall. After the Cougars regained some momentum, the Cougars had chances to extend their lead, but neither team would score in the period. UM-Dearborn would score halfway into the final stanza, cutting the Cougar lead to 2-1. After the Wolverines pulled their goalie, Cleary capitalized, as Bailey Ewonus scored an empty net goal, with assists from Landen Engles and Mason Blow to ensure the home-ice victory.
Nick Meyering was stellar between the pipes, as he made 31 saves on 32 shots faced.
The win improves Cleary's record to 3-1 overall, 1-1 in the WHAC. The Cougars will look ahead to next weekend, when they'll take on the Aquinas College Saints. The Cougars will host the Saints as part of Homecoming on Saturday, October 11, with an 12:30 PM puck drop at 140 Ice Den.
